±1±: Best Buy My poor husband contends I can't shut up about this book so I must have liked it. Two weeks have gone by and I am still thinking about it, I must have loved it. The book was pure fun and adventure - really what more do you want?
While some readers may feel like this is just Percy with true siblings and Egyptian gods instead of half siblings and Greek gods,for me, the book stood solidly on its own. I liked Percy and the Olympians series because of its fast pace, witty writing, and ability to give old myths new (and often crazy) life. However, I don't know if I genuinely cared all that much for the characters - more like fun diversions or pleasant habits than people I couldn't imagine losing. My feelings about Sadie and Carter are completely the opposite. Riordan did a remarkable job fleshing out the siblings and their relationship. I found myself constantly comparing the nature of their relationship and dialog to another popular book with siblings (The Alchemist series) and Riordan's portrayal is so much more realistic. I also know less about Egyptian mythology and in many ways that made the Red Pyramid more enjoyable - I wasn't constantly fact checking or comparing the book to what I thought I knew.
I do know I will be pre-ordering number 2!
Parents Note: I read out loud to my young boys every night and I would probably hesitate to read this to them until they are in the 9-10 age range. This is not because of inappropriate content (although a few of the scenes/characters are a bit frightening), but more because the character/terminology list is pretty long and some of the mythology is a bit more complicated than with the Percy series. on Sale!
